Imaging Computer Update Policy – MSP and End User Guidance

Imaging Computer Update Policy – MSP and End User Guidance

Purpose

To maintain the stability, reliability, and vendor-supported configuration of imaging systems, special update requirements apply to all imaging capture workstations, including Treatment Room imaging computers and PANO/CBCT imaging computers.

For the MSP (Managed Service Provider)

Approved Patch Management Scope

For all imaging capture workstations:

  • Apply Windows Security Updates only.

  • Do not perform routine firmware updates.

  • Do not perform Windows feature upgrades (e.g., 23H2 to 24H2) unless specifically approved.

  • Do not perform hardware driver updates unless required to resolve a documented issue or directed by the imaging vendor.

  • Do not install software that could impact imaging acquisition, device communication, or system performance without approval.

Firmware Updates

Firmware updates should not be included in standard maintenance, patching, or lifecycle management activities.

Firmware updates may only be performed when:

  • A specific issue is being actively troubleshot.

  • The update is recommended by the imaging equipment vendor.

  • The update has been reviewed and approved before implementation.

Goal

These workstations support clinical imaging equipment and must remain in a stable, validated configuration. Limiting updates to Windows security patches reduces the risk of imaging software, hardware, or driver incompatibilities.

For End Users

What to Do

  • Allow Windows security updates when prompted by IT.

  • Report any imaging, scanner, sensor, PANO, or CBCT issues to IT or your support provider.

  • Follow any update instructions provided by IT.

What Not to Do

  • Do not install firmware updates.

  • Do not install driver updates.

  • Do not upgrade Windows versions or features.

  • Do not install additional software without approval.

  • Do not attempt to troubleshoot imaging equipment by updating system software or firmware.

If There Is a Problem

If an imaging workstation or imaging device is not functioning properly:

  1. Stop using the affected system if image capture is impacted.

  2. Contact IT or the MSP.

  3. Firmware, driver, or other non-security updates will only be considered as part of an approved troubleshooting process.

Summary

Imaging Capture Computers, Treatment Room Imaging Computers, and PANO/CBCT Imaging Computers should receive Windows Security Updates only. Firmware, driver, and feature updates are not part of normal maintenance and should only be performed when required to resolve a specific issue and after appropriate review and approval.
